Cavaliers fall to Hokies, 21-9

Virginia Tech defeated Virginia 21-9 yesterday in Blacksburg. The Cavaliers could not get anything going through the air, racking up just 43 yards passing.

While the wind and cold were certainly factors, Virginia had their chances through the air, but failed to capitalize on good field position and often-open receivers.

UVa’s running game was superb, but that was not enough to overcome the lack of a passing attack that the Hoos had depended on most of the year. A poor kicking game didn’t not help their cause. When the Hokies blocked Tom Hagan’s punt for a touchdown in the second quarter, that was the break that Virginia Tech needed.

Virginia Tech kept the ball on the ground most of the game with Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones. Together they combined for 199 yards and two touchdowns.

Virginia’s running attack was led by freshman Wali Lundy, who racked up 127 yards on 29 carries.
