2006 Class: Minor A Major Player

When Brandon Minor received scholarship offers from the University of Michigan and N.C. State last Wednesday, he described his feeling as “shock.” The two offers probably weren’t too shocking to anyone else that follows central Virginia high school football, as Minor has enjoyed back-to-back excellent seasons for one of the state’s best high school programs – Varina High School.

As a sophomore, Minor earned Richmond Times-Dispatch second-team all-metro honors. This season, he rushed 196 times for 2,091 yards and scored 32 touchdowns, earning RTD first-team all-metro honors. He finished fourth in the region in rushing.

“He’s right around 6-1, maybe 6-1 ½, right around 210 pounds,” Varina assistant coach Blanda Wolfe said. “As for his 40 time, he ran slowly at the Nike camp last year (time was 4.75 in the 40). I think he’s right at 4.6… maybe closer to 4.5 now. I think he tested badly up there. I know he’s a lot faster in a game.

“He’s more of a power-type runner. I’ve heard some people say he reminds them a lot of like Eric Dickerson back in the day. He’s not the best at making cuts and things like that yet, but he’ll run over you. He looks to run over you rather than run around you.”
