Q&A: ACC Sports Journal Editor Dave Glenn

Dave Glenn, Editor of the ACC Area Sports Journal, discusses the 2007 football recruiting classes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Glenn gives his rankings and discusses the headliners of each program, the surprises and disappointments and more in what seems to be a good but not great recruiting year for the ACC.

How did you rank the teams in the ACC?

Dave Glenn: We ended up going with Georgia Tech at 1, Miami at 2 and North Carolina at 3. We have three teams together on the 4 line – Clemson, Florida State and Virginia Tech. Then Virginia at 7, Maryland at 8, three teams on the 9 line in BC, N.C. State and Wake, and then Duke at 12.

One of the biggest stories was that Chan Gailey for the first time in his tenure at Georgia Tech went out and won a bunch of head-to-head recruiting battles against SEC schools and other big-time ACC programs. Chan Gailey deserves credit to this point for player development and putting well-coached teams on the field on Saturday. That’s why he has won seven games every year and nine games and an ACC title game appearance last year. The exciting thing if you’re a Georgia Tech fan is that, with the exception of Calvin Johnson and a handful of others, in previous years Gailey was really not getting his share of the guys everybody wanted. This year, he got a bunch of them. In theory, if you’re still good at player development and you’re going to put out a well-coached team and you get a higher caliber of player on the front end, then that’s an exciting combination for Georgia Tech.
