Springers Boast Deep, Talented ’08 Class

Head coach Scott Burton calls his 2008 class one of the “deepest” classes he has had at Highland Springs High School. Coach Burton boasts as many as five potential Division 1A prospects, including WR Harry Lee Daniel, DL Antoine Hopkins , QB Matthew Hurdle, WR/ATH Deon Miller and TE Rod Wheeler .

Who Burton believes may be his top prospect may come as a surprise. It is not lefty signal caller Matt Hurdle or former all-metro selection Hopkins. Instead, it’s Deon Miller.

“Deon is probably the top recruit we have because of his upside,” Burton said. “We measured him about three weeks ago. With his shoes on, he was 6’7″, about 195 pounds. He is 12 or 13 pounds heavier than he was in the season. The light bulb has really gone on for him. He was always a good kid, but he was shy and bashful and somewhat shy in terms of confidence. Now, he’s proud of what he’s becoming. Athletically, he is extremely gifted. He is always balanced and never outside the framework of his body. He is extremely balanced. I think coaches are going to be really, really impressed with him if he continues to do the right things.”

Miller is a big, fast and smooth target at the wide receiver position. His athleticism is evident, especially to the college coaches who stopped by Highland Springs last May.
