Funderburke, Richardson Top Smith’s Jr. Class

One of the top high school football program’s in the state, Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) is no stranger to talent. Quarterback Phillip Sims and defensive tackle Evan Hailes headlined Smith’s 2010 class, with Sims choosing Alabama and Hailes committing to Penn State. The 2011 class is a talented one as well and is headlined by wide receiver Quinta Funderburk e, who recently picked up a huge offer.

“Quinta has been offered by Alabama,” Tigers head coach Rich Morgan said. “He was offered a couple of weeks ago. He’s excited about that. Everyone now is gathering film and in the evaluating stages. Alabama is first, but I’m sure more will be coming.”

Current Virginia receiver Tim Smith dominated the headlines in 2008, but Funderburke had his chance to breakthrough in 2009. The AP Group AAA second-team all-state selection did just that, hauling in 62 passes for 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns.

“He’s what everybody is looking for,” Morgan said. “He is between 6-2 and 6-3, and he can run and jump. He is a mismatch and gives problems to the defense. We have had some good receivers here, but he is definitely the biggest one out of all of them. He is approaching 6-2 1/2. He is a big, physical receiver with great speed. He made the most of his time to shine and we are looking for him to be the same threat next year.”
