Chesapeake Bowl News And Notes

Game Story

A fired up South squad (DC, MD, VA, WV) fell flat early, struggling on both sides of the ball and finding itself down 14-0 to the North (PA, NJ, DE) after the first quarter on the inaugural Chesapeake Bowl.

North running back Maika Polamalu (Pottsgrove High School, Pottstown (PA), uncommitted), started the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run. Following the first of two interceptions by cornerback Kyshoen Jarrett (East Stroudsburg (PA), Virginia Tech commitment), Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, PA) quarterback Matt Johns on connected with a wide open Terrell Roberson (Penn Hills H.S., Pittsburgh (PA), uncommitted) on a 49-yard touchdown strike to give the North the two-touchdown lead.

The South responded early in the second quarter. Following a Polamalu fumble, Stanford-bound signal caller Kevin Hogan (Gonzaga, Washington (D.C.)) hit Lake Braddock (Burke, VA) wide receiver Matt Zanellato for 36 yards. Gilman (Baltimore, MD) star Darius Jennings then scored on an 11-yard touchdown run and the South closed within a touchdown at 14-7.

The ensuing North drive was highlighted by one of the plays of the night. A deep pass by Johnson was initially intercepted by Meade (MD) cornerback Keron Coston. Costen proceeded to fumble, and Clairton (PA) wideout Desimon Green — the intended receiver — recovered and scampered down to the South 15. A few plays later, Green, a former Pitt commit, hauled in a touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone to give the North a 21-7 lead.
