Onalaska’s Thomas Plans To Visit UVa

For good reason, much of the focus with Virginia men’s basketball is on who the staff may be able to add this spring, whether it’s through the transfer route or adding a high school senior and/or a junior college player to the 2012 class. This spring and summer will be important on the 2013 class front as well, though, and Onalaska (WI) shooting guard Matt Thomas is one of the Cavaliers’ top targets.

The 6’4″, 195-pound junior turned in an outstanding season in 2011/2012, averaging 21.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.1 assists per game. He led the Hilltoppers to a 27-1 overall record and a WIAA Division 2 state title, earning AP first-team all-state honors for his performance. Thomas came up big on the biggest stage, scoring 30 points in the state championship win over Kaukana.

Boston College, Creighton, Iowa State, Marquette, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Virginia and Wisconsin are among the schools that have offered Thomas, who has yet to narrow his list.

“He’s kind of waiting on that,” said Wisconsin Playmakers (Thomas’ AAU team) Director Jason Jesperson. “I’ll talk a little more with him soon to talk about him narrowing his list down. He’ll probably wait until after the first part of AAU season to do this. The schools he is most seriously considering right now are Iowa State, Virginia, Wisconsin and Boston College. Boston College has come on strong here recently.”
