The Week In Review, 8th Edition

– 5-star safety Quin Blanding and his Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) teammates kept their playoff hopes alive with a 28-6 win over Kempsville. The Marlins (4-4) face an important test this week against Cox, which is 5-3 and currently the no. 11 seed in the 6A South region. The top 16 seeds in each region make the playoffs, leaving Bayside on the outside right now at the 20 spot.

– Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) destroyed a solid King’s Fork squad, 62-12. The Tigers are now 8-0 and ranked no. 1 in the 6A South region. 5-star DL Andrew Brown and the Oscar Smith defense has surrendered double-digits only once this season. On average, the Tigers D is allowing only 5.9 points per game.

– Clearwater Central Catholic (Clearwater, FL), which features UVa linebacker recruit Caanan Brown , cruised to a 44-3 win over Admiral Farragut. With the win, Clearwater Central (7-1) claimed its second consecutive Class 3A-5 championship. Up next for the Marauders is a matchup against a 7-1 IMG Academy squad led by former FSU quarterback Chris Weinke, who is the team’s head coach.

– Episcopal Academy (Newtown Square, PA) defeated Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, 28-20, to improve to 3-0 in the Inter-AC league and 8-1 overall. Virginia-bound senior Evan Butts , a starter at tight end and defensive end for the Churchmen, forced two fumbles as his team rattled off 28 straight points to start the second half.

– Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee, GA) lost a tough one last Friday night, when Norcross defeated the Lions, 24-20, thanks to a touchdown run with one minute remaining in the game. Peachtree Ridge drops to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in Region 7-AAAAAA play.

UVa running back recruit Jordan Ellis had 81 yards rushing on 21 carries in the loss.

– Senior corner/receiver Jeffery Farrar had two interceptions, one of which he returned 23 yards for a touchdown, as Upland (CA) downed Alta Loma, 45-20. The Scots improve to 5-3 on the season.

– Woodgrove (Purcellville, VA), which features UVa-bound defensive end/outside linebacker Jordan Jackson , shutout Dominion, 38-0, and is now 5-3 on the season. The Wolverines have recorded shutouts in four of their five wins, and they surrendered only seven points in a win over Heritage.

– Central Gwinnett (Lawrenceville, GA) fell to Parkview, 21-13. Cornerback Darious Latimore and company are now 2-6 on the year.

– Chancellor (Fredericksburg, VA) lost to Spotsylvania, 14-12, and is now 1-7 on the season. Offensive line recruit Steven Moss hopes his team can finish out the season strong with two wins, beginning this week against Courtland.

– As reported on the EDGE, Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) offensive tackle Will Richardson has opened up his recruitment and is now giving Florida State, N.C. State, and Wisconsin a close look. On the gridiron, the 6’6″, 300-pound prospect returned to action last week to help his team defeat Bartlett Yancey, 44-13. He missed the previous six weeks to a knee injury that required minor surgery.

Cummings is now 3-6 and has won two straight.
