The Week In Review, 12th Edition

– Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) defeated Grassfield for the second time this season. Last week, the Tigers took out the Grizzlies, 41-7, in the second round of the 6A South Region (Conferences 1 & 2) playoffs. Unbeaten Oscar Smith, led by All-Conference 2 Co-Defensive Player of the Year and UVa recruit Andrew Brown , hosts Forest Park in the regional semifinals on Saturday.

– Clearwater Central Catholic (Clearwater, FL) advances to the Class 3A state semifinals after defeating St. Petersburg Catholic, 49-16, in last week’s Class 3A Region 5 final. The Marauders outscored SPC 28-0 in the second half to seal the victory.

Virginia linebacker recruit Caanan Brown and company travel to Miami Westminster Christian in the state semis this week.

– Varina (VA) saw its season come to an end last week, falling to Forest Park in the second round of the 6A South Region (Conferences 3 & 4) playoffs. UVa wide receiver recruit Donovan Dowling had five catches for 102 yards in the 27-18 loss, in which his team fell behind 17-0 before making a comeback attempt.

The Blue Devils conclude the 2013 season with a 9-3 record.

– RB Jordan Ellis had 22 carries for 132 yards but Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee, GA) lost to Dacula in Class AAAAAA second round playoff action, 28-21. Ellis, whose fantastic senior season included 13 touchdowns over the course of the previous three games, was held scoreless in the loss.

– CB Jeffery Farrar had an interception as Upland (CA) defeated Santiago, 30-29, in the CIF Southern Section (Inland Division) second round last week. Upland won the regular season matchup between the two teams, 43-42. Winners of five straight games, the Highlanders will now host Centennial in the CIF SS semifinals on Friday night.

– Woodgrove (Purcellville, VA) dispatched of Eastern View, 49-7, in the second round of the 4A North Region playoffs. DE/LB Jordan Jackson and the Wolverines defense was stingy in the regular season and has continued to play well in the postseason, surrendering only 14 points total in two playoff wins. Woodgrove will now take on Salem (Salem, VA) in the regional semifinals.
