Cavs In Hot Pursuit Of Sophomore PG

Page (Greensboro, N.C.) sophomore point guard Ty Graves is on the radar of many high major Division 1 schools, but at this point only one has extended a scholarship offer. That school is the University of Virginia, which came through following Graves’ impressive performance at Tony Bennett’s Elite Camp in August of 2013.

“The biggest thing was [the Virginia coaches] liked the cerebral aspect of his game,” said Kevin Graves, Ty’s father and Director of the Karolina Diamonds AAU squad, for which Graves plays. “I think they liked that he understands the game, understands angles, and how to run the primary and secondary fast break. The other thing they liked is the fact that he can shoot lights out. There aren’t many point guards today that can strike when they want to like he can. You look at Coach Bennett and what he brought to Washington State and Virginia. He has had guys like Klay Thompson and Joe Harris, guys who can extend defenses. The biggest thing they like about Ty is his cerebral nature on the court and that he can shoot.”

Graves possesses a competitive drive that has helped him succeed beyond the basketball court. He is a good student and takes honors courses. He has done well in other sports such as football, where he had 21 touchdowns his final middle school season before he moved on to high school, where he is focusing only on basketball. He is also accomplished in taekwondo and playing the trumpet.

“No matter what sport he is playing or what he is doing, he has to be the best,” Kevin Graves said of his son.
