Kamara Looking To Make Instant Impact

In the months leading up to the 2013 regular season, the University of Virginia was considered by many to be the clear favorite for 4-star wide receiver prospect Jamil Kamara. UVa would indeed win out, but the Bishop Sullivan (Virginia Beach, VA) star almost slipped through the Cavaliers’ grasp thanks to a 2-10 record in 2013.

“I was considering going to Wisconsin very heavily, and Pitt also, but for a long time Virginia was at the top of the list,” Kamara recalled. “As time went on, Virginia kind of moved to the bottom. I almost didn’t take an official visit there. I was going to go to South Carolina for a visit, but that got cancelled, so then I decided to take the Virginia visit. Taking my official visit, I came away feeling Virginia had everything I wanted. It was a rough season, but even with all the bad things I felt like it was the right place for me and I could come in and help make it better.”

UVa was the fourth and final official visit for the 6’2”, 210-pound wideout, who also took officials to Wisconsin, Michigan State and Pittsburgh. The possibility of playing a significant role as a true freshman, something head coach Mike London and company communicated very clearly to Kamara the weekend of December 13-15 (Kamara’s official visit), was a huge plus in favor of the Cavaliers.

“[London] told me I could come in there and have the opportunity right away to earn a spot on the first team,” said Kamara, who as a senior had 69 receptions for 1,399 yards and 23 touchdowns for state champion Bishop Sullivan. “It was a huge thing for me to hear that I’ll have a great chance to start. Watching film with Coach Hagans, he was showing me a lot of the plays they run are things I do right now. They have the same routes and concepts I’ve run. That was a huge thing, too.”
