Sabre Scoop: MD/DC Recruiting & More

A key source of UVa’s out-of-state recruiting success in Mike London’s first four full recruiting classes has been the Maryland/Washington D.C. area. Of the 41 out-of-state players that have signed with the Cavaliers the past four years, 13 hail from the Maryland/DC, an average of just over three recruits in each class. Not surprisingly, the Virginia coaches are active in recruiting this area in the class of 2015.

The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, which features top prep powers such as Good Counsel and DeMatha Catholic (Virginia has six players from these two schools on its current roster), is a frequent stomping ground of Virginia’s. So far the Cavaliers have offered six WCAC class of 2015 prospects with four hailing from Gonzaga College: Quarterback Nick Johns, wide receiver Jabari Greenwood, offensive lineman Richie Petitbon and cornerback Marcus Lewis. Good Counsel’s Darius Fullwood, a defensive end, and Myles Robinson, a receiver, have been offered by the Hoos. And St. John’s College athlete Ayron Monroe has a Virginia offer as well.

Of those WCAC prospects, the Cavaliers probably have the best chance right now with Johns, Monroe and Robinson, though I wouldn’t consider Virginia the favorite with any of the three at this point. Johns just scored an offer from Maryland and seems impressed, tweeting the following on February 12: “The hometown Maryland just offered. Its a great day.”

Johns will visit Maryland this weekend but may be on Grounds to visit UVa on March 1. He has been to Virginia several times, including last summer for a 7-on-7 and the BYU game last fall.
