RALEIGH, N.C. – Virginia freshman walk-on Jeff Jones has a different resource than many players when it comes to NCAA Tournament advice. His father, after all, took UVa and American to the big dance and remains on the Division I sidelines at Old Dominion.

The younger Jones gave his dad a call Friday night after the Hoos advanced past Coastal Carolina.

“I talked to him [Friday] night after the game and told him I was nervous how we played against a 16 seed,” Jones said. “He reassured me that the NCAA Championship is a whole new monster as he said it. Mentally, it’s a whole new game. He said we got the first one out of the way.”

The elder Jones has better perspective than many on what it takes to advance in the NCAA Tournament. Jones played on Virginia’s 1981 team that made it to the Final Four. After his playing days, he was an assistant coach on the 1984 Final Four team and the 1989 Elite Eight team. Jones was the head coach for the Cavaliers’ team that made the Elite Eight in 1995.
