UVa’s Scores First 2016 Class Commit

Randolph-Henry (Charlotte Court House, VA) wide receiver Joseph Reed grew up a Virginia fan, but he did not immediately commit when head coach Mike London offered a scholarship at UVa’s Spring Game this past April. It didn’t take long for the 6’2″, 200-pound rising junior to become a Cavalier, however.

While on Grounds on an unofficial visit today, the standout prospect became the first member of the class of 2016 to commit to the Hoos. Reed, who was accompanied by his parents on today’s trip, confirmed his commitment to TheSabre.com via Twitter. We will have more with him tomorrow, following his appearance in UVa’s first one-day camp of 2014.

Reed has excellent size for a rising junior. He also has terrific speed. This combination would translate well to several positions on the major college level, but Virginia likes him as a receiver at this point.

“He’s roughly 6’2”, 205 or 210 pounds as a receiver. He runs in the high 4.4s in the 40. I can’t teach that. God gave him that,” said Randolph-Henry second-year head coach Jay Cole, who played Reed primarily at slot receiver in the 2013 season. “He also is a 3.5 GPA kid. He’s not an academic worry. He is in all upper-level honors courses. He comes from a strong family.”

UVa receivers coach Marques Hagans has developed a close relationship with Reed. Defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta is serving as the talented athlete’s primary recruiter.

Reed is an excellent baseball player as well, but Cole isn’t sure if he will pursue two sports on the college level. He is Randolph-Henry’s starting centerfielder and has helped the Statesmen to the Group 2A state semifinals, which take place next Friday, June 13.
