Sabre Scoop: Scholarship Spots Running Low

With last week’s commitment from West Orange (Winter Garden, FL) defensive end Brandon Wilson, the University of Virginia football program has 21 verbal commitments in the class of 2015. At least two prospects – offensive tackle Grant Polk and linebacker C.J. Stalker – plan on enrolling in January of 2015, and if they do that would allow the Hoos flexibility in terms of how many prospects the staff can enroll next summer. A major FBS program can enroll 25 players in a given class; however, early enrollees can count toward the previous class. If the overall scholarship numbers check out (an FBS program is allowed 85 scholarship players in a given season), the Cavaliers could add a few more players who are currently high school seniors.

Position-wise, the class breakdown is as follows:

– 1 quarterback (Nick Johns)
– 2 running backs (Christopher Sharp, Olamide Zaccheaus)
– 1 wide receiver (David Eldridge III)
– 2 tight ends (Richard Burney Jr., Tanner Cowley)
– 3 offensive linemen (Ryan Bischoff, Grant Polk, RJ Proctor)
– 1 lineman (Eli Hanback (OL or DT))
– 1 defensive tackle (James Trucilla)
– 3 defensive ends (Rasool Clemons, Gladimir Paul, Brandon Wilson)
– 3 linebackers (Kareem McDonald, Jahvoni Simmons, C.J. Stalker)
– 1 cornerback (Kareem Gibson)
– 2 safeties (David Curry, Juan Thornhill)
– 1 athlete (Myles Robinson (CB or WR))

So who are the top remaining targets left on the board? Here are some of the better bets in terms of prospects the coaches really want and who also are seriously considering the Hoos.
