Top Class Of 2017 PG Alex Barcello Reflects On UVa Visit

After watching Alex Barcello during an open gym at Corona del Sol High School (Tempe, AZ) last September, Virginia head coach Tony Bennett was sold. It was then that Coach Bennett offered the 6’2” point guard, who was just beginning his sophomore year.

Virginia was the second school to offer Barcello, at the time joining Grand Canyon University. New Mexico offered a day later, and since then the class of 2017 point guard has scored offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Creighton, DePaul, Memphis, Oregon, Providence, St. Mary’s, USC, Utah, Wake Forest (offered this week), and Washington State.

The Corona del Sol boys varsity basketball program is a powerhouse in Arizona, having won four straight state titles. Barcello helped the Aztecs win each of the last two state championships, averaging nine points and four assists per game his freshman year (including an 18-point performance in the title game) and 20 points per game last season as a sophomore.

Barcello, who has continued to play well on the Adidas AAU circuit, earned an invitation to the 2015 NBPA Top 100 Camp, which was held last week in the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.
