In a game where momentum shifts were plentiful, it’s fitting that the Virginia special teams had a rollercoaster day of emotions. The UVa football team held on to defeat William & Mary on Saturday, 34-29, and the extra units had more than a bit role in the drama.
First, the good.
One of the biggest plays of the day belonged to Maurice Canady, who has picked up punt return duties during the last two weeks. He has looked the part with good decision-making and confident moves on returns. Against the Tribe, he added a signature moment.
Early in the third quarter, Canady caught a punt and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown. It marked the fifth longest punt return for touchdown in school history and tied for the eighth longest return overall. The last Wahoo to return a punt for touchdown before Canady was Alvin Pearman, who had a 70-yarder against Temple in 2004.
