OL/DL Ben Trent Excited For UVA Opportunity

UVA, Ben Trent said, “has been a school that I have been around my entire life. It has great academics and it is close to my hometown.”

So when new UVA football head coach Bronco Mendenhall expressed interest over Christmas Break, Trent, a senior, was interested. Mendenhall ultimately offered the Jefferson Forest (Forest, VA) product a preferred walk-on spot with the Hoos. On January 20, Trent announced that he had accepted the opportunity.

“I am coming on as a preferred walk on,” Trent continued. “The coaches feel if I bring a great work ethic, intensity, and commitment I will have a great chance to earn a scholarship. It is definitely my goal to make a contribution to the UVA Football Program and earn a scholarship.”

At 6’6”, 290 pounds, Trent obviously has the size of a major FBS-level offensive lineman. The first-team all-area selection was also productive, racking up 26 pancake blocks for a Jefferson Forest offense that ran the Wishbone and scored over 30 points in all but one game in 2015. Trent played offensive tackle and defensive tackle, helping the Cavaliers to a 12-1 overall record that included an undefeated regular season.

“They like my aggressiveness off the ball and would most likely have me at offensive tackle,” Trent replied when asked what the Virginia coaches liked most about his game.

Trent had high praise for Virginia’s coaches as well.

“I am very impressed with the work ethic and character that coach Mendenhall and his staff are bringing to UVA. Coach Tujague is obviously a high energy coach who will expect and demand nothing but the best from his players,” Trent said.

Earning a scholarship would obviously be nice, but Trent’s main goal is to help turn the Virginia football program into a successful one.

“My goal is to contribute to the UVA football team and help bring success to the program in any way I can,” Trent said.

  1. Mr. Trent- you have absolutely made the best decision. I have followed Coach Mendenhall and his staff at BYU for the last 11 years and I believe you are getting the very best coaches and mentors who you could find in college football. Training & practicing under this staff including Coach Wintrich & his assistant will be extremely difficult as they will push you to the very extreme of getting 100% out of you physically, mentally & spiritually but the reward will be shown on the field of play and in your own mind knowing, as John Wooden used to say, ” you have done your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming” in every way both on and off the field. Good luck, God’s speed & GO HOOS!
