Recruiting Notes: Football, MBB Extend New Offers

FOOTBALL RECRUITING NOTES

New O-Line Offer Goes Out

Fordson (Dearborn, MI) offensive lineman Zac Darwiche announced today that he has received a scholarship offer from the University of Virginia.

UVA would be the first BCS school to offer the 6’5″, 290-pound rising senior, who reportedly has one other FBS-level offer from the University of Buffalo. Bronco Mendenhall and company have received commitments from three offensive line commitments so far in the 2017 Class; however, the need at the position is still great.

Check out highlights of Darwiche below and stay tuned for comments from the Michigan native.

UVA Commit Receives New Offer

Dudley (Greensboro, N.C.) class of 2017 offensive line prospect Bryson Speas seems happy with the commitment he gave UVA on June 24, but he has a new scholarship to consider after this past Saturday. Last weekend the 6’4″, 265-pound tackle took to Twitter to announce that he was offered by ACC-rival NC State while on an unofficial visit in Raleigh.

Whether this ultimately means anything with regards to Speas’ college decision remains to be seen, but it’s understandable if Virginia fans are nervous given the recent negative offensive line news. Sadiq Olanrewaju and Eric Tetlow retired from football because of injury, and last week we learned that offensive guard Jared Cohen had given up football. Cohen, a transfer from UNC, had three years of eligibility remaining and was eligible to play this season. The offensive guard was expected to be a part of the line rotation. Also, Florida native Grant Polk, who would be a red-shirt offensive tackle this season, transferred out the program this spring.

Speas, who said in this EDGE article that “it feels great” to be a Cavalier, committed to the Hoos as an offensive tackle.

TOP OL Target Eliminates Hoos

Virginia received a close look from rising senior offensive lineman Marcus Minor, but the talented prospect did not include the Cavaliers in his final seven. Auburn, Florida, Maryland, Miami, Michigan State, Rutgers, and Virginia Tech are left standing for the DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) product.

BASKETBALL RECRUITING: INDANA SHOOTING GUARD LANDS OFFER

Musa Jallow, a 6’5″ shooting guard out of Bloomington North High School in Bloomington, Indiana, has received scholarship offers from Butler, Purdue, Virginia, and Northwestern within the past 24 hours. He announced the offer from UVA yesterday.

Jallow made his way to Charlottesville last October and tweeted the following about the experience…

“Heading back to btown after an amazing visit to University of Virginia! Great school, staff, campus, everything! I’ll be back”

UVA has no scholarships available in the 2017 Class, leaving the rising junior class as the primary focus. Tony Bennett currently has five scholarship spots at his disposal in 2018. Bennett enjoyed success in recruiting Indiana in the class of 2016, landing McDonald’s All-American combo guard Kyle Guy.

Indiana and Vanderbilt have also offered Jallow, whose highlights you can see below.
