UVA One Of 11 New Offers For 2017 Forward Chase Johnson

July was great to Ripley (W.V.) forward Chase Johnson, who claimed offers from the following schools between the 13th and 28th of the month: Kansas State, Tennessee, TCU, Marquette, Florida, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, and Butler. West Virginia and Penn State offered scholarships prior to July.

The 6’7”, 205-pound prospect impressed on his high school team each of the past two seasons, averaging 18.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game as a sophomore and 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and two blocks per contest last season as a junior (stats per MaxPreps). He says his athleticism, speed, shooting ability, and ability to run the floor were on full display in front of college coaches this past month, which included three live Evaluation periods.

The UVA offer was particularly interesting considering it came on the heels of the Hoos taking a commitment from Texas rising senior guard Marco Anthony. Anthony, who like Johnson is a rising senior, took the only scholarship spot Virginia had available in the 2017/2018 season. Coach Bennett, however, is still making a play for West Virginia standout.

“They would like me to [reclassify to the class of 2018] but I told coach Bennett that I’m not committing until the spring and he might have a scholarship for 2017 by then,” Johnson wrote.
