This year’s Paul VI (Fairfax, VA) boys varsity basketball squad features one of the most highly regarded juniors in the nation in Brandon Slater, a 6’6”, 200-pound wing and consensus 4-star prospect. Led by Pittsburgh-bound senior guard Aaron Thompson and Slater, Paul VI is 2-0 this season, looking to improve upon last year’s 20-14 campaign.

“I think this team has something special,” wrote Slater, who scored 10 points in Paul VI’s season opener again Cesar Chavez and 19 points in a win over St. Mary’s Ryken. “I think just having more confidence in what I do will really help me and my team succeed.”

Slater and other high school juniors are allowed to make college official visits beginning January 1. The talented junior has visited some schools unofficially, including UVA, but has not decided where or when he will make official visits.

“I haven’t scheduled anything yet. After school cools down I probably will start that,” Slater replied when asked if he had scheduled any officials. He adds that he has not made any decisions on possible unofficial visits for games, either.

Slater listed UVA as well as “Maryland, Pitt, South Carolina, Miami, Villanova, and Louisville” when asked which schools he is hearing from the most. From UVA, Slater says he speaks with “pretty much with everyone” on the staff on a “regular basis.”

“[The Virginia coaches] just talk to me about life,” noted Slater, who claims scholarship offers from all of the schools listed above.

Slater, who is eyeing a successful 2016/2017 season, is not close to making his college commitment.

“I have a long time before I even think about [making a decision],” Slater wrote.
