UVA Football Recruiting Notes: New In-State Offer Goes Out

Catching you up on some recent UVA football recruiting news, beginning with a new offer going out in the Richmond (VA) area.

Smith Lands Cavalier Offer

Kaleb Smith traveled from Ashland (VA) to Charlottesville last week to visit the University of Virginia. He tweeted out this positive message following that experience …

Smith had more positive news to tweet on Monday, April 3, letting everyone know that Cavalier head coach Bronco Mendenhall had offered a scholarship. Virginia is the first school to offer Patrick Henry High School’s safety/wide receiver prospect.

Listed as being 6’3”, 195 pounds, Smith plays smart, is a sure tackler, and appears to equally effective against the pass and the run. In-State Sophomore Scores Second Offer

Virginia was the first school to offer 6’5”, 220-pound linebacker/defensive end Brandon Smith of Louisa (Mineral, VA), coming through on February 20 of this year. Virginia Tech has become the second school to offer the promising athlete, extending a scholarship this past weekend.

This likely won’t be the end of Smith’s recruiting success. In addition to UVA and Tech, he is receiving serious interest from Clemson and Penn State, among others. UVA likes him as a linebacker.

Freshmen Phenoms

Providence Day

If Porter Rooks and Jacolbe Cowan are any indication, Providence Day (Charlotte, N.C.) has a lot to look forward to in the coming three seasons.

Both Rooks, a 6’3”, 185-pound wide receiver/safety, and Cowan, a 6’5”, 250-pound lineman, are firmly on the major college radar as rising sophomores. Getting an early start on its class of 2020 recruiting, Virginia has offered both players.

Since March 21, when he received his first offer from Georgia, Cowan has scored offers from Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Syracuse and UVA. Rooks boasts offers from Louisville, Wake Forest, East Carolina, North Carolina, UVA, Virginia Tech, NC State and Iowa State.

Kevin Pyne, who stands 6’8″ and weighs 255 pounds, received a scholarship offer from UVA this week. The Mills (MA) freshman offenive tackle is already a hot commodity, boasting scholarships from Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee and Virginia Tech, among others.
