The August before his sophomore year, Greensboro Day (Greensboro, N.C.) wing guard/forward John Newman attended the University of Virginia’s Elite Camp. Since then, Greensboro Day head coach Freddy Johnson said, Cavalier head coach Tony Bennett and assistant Ron Sanchez have monitored the progress of the 6’5″, 185-pound prospect, who is now finishing up his junior year.

Sanchez has been to Greensboro Day multiple times according to Johnson, while Bennett stopped by the school last fall. Bennett then watched Newman, who plays for Team CP3 on the Nike EYBL circuit, during Live Evaluation Periods the past two weekends.

Last night, Newman was offered a scholarship by Virginia’s head coach.

“[Newman] said he had an excellent conversation with [Bennett],” Johnson said. “He liked everything he said. He said they were on the same page.”
