Talented Wing John Newman Claims Offer From UVA

Greensboro Day (Greensboro, N.C.) class of 2018 wing John Newman reports an offer from head coach Tony Bennett and the University of Virginia.

Listed anywhere from 6’4” to 6’6”, the 247Sports 4-star prospect (Rivals and Scout rank him as a 3-star) averaged 11.8 points per game for a Greensboro Day squad that captured the NCISAA Class 3-A state championship, achieved a 34-4 overall record, and won a first-round matchup over favored IMG Academy in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Nationals in the 2016/2017 season.

Newman, an all-state selection each of the past two seasons, was selected to the 2017 Greensboro News & Record HSExtra.com All-Area team. News & Record HS Extra reporters describe him as an “athletic wing who is a big-time defender and a consistent scorer with a well-developed midrange game.”

Newman plays on the 17U Nike EYBL circuit for Team CP3, which has achieved a 6-2 record through the first two EYBL sessions of the year. Newman has played in seven of those games and is averaging 9.6 points (61% FG, 10-of-13 from FT, 3-of-6 from 3), 5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 turnovers per game.

In addition to the Cavaliers, Newman reportedly has been offered by Charlotte, Cincinnati, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Providence and Wake Forest.
