Virginia Men’s Basketball Recruiting Notes: Visit News, Morsell Highlights

Greensboro Day (Greensboro, N.C.) class of 2021 shooting guard Carson McCorkle boasts scholarship offers from Baylor, Butler, Florida, Georgia Tech, Iowa, NC State, South Carolina, Wake Forest and Wichita State. The 6’3” sophomore is looking to add another on Friday (August 24) when he visits the University of Virginia.

Jake Weingarten, founder of high school basketball recruiting website Stock Risers, first reported the news.

McCorkle began his high school career at Broughton in Raleigh (N.C.). After attending Broughton for the 2016-17 school year, he transferred to private school power Greensboro Day (Greensboro, N.C.), where he reclassified to the class of 2021. McCorkle averaged 10.7 points and 4 rebounds per game for head coach Freddie Johnson as a freshman this past season, helping Greensboro Day capture the North Carolina 3A state championship.

This spring and summer McCorkle played for Garner Road 2020 West on the Adidas Grassroots 16U circuit. The team went 7-1 and had a final four finish in the Adidas Summer Championships, and was runner-up at the Fab 48 in Las Vegas. He has also earned a spot on the 2018 United States Youth Olympic Games Men’s Basketball Team, which will compete at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, October 6-18.

Phenom Hoops Report ranks McCorkle as the top class of 2021 prospect in North Carolina. Hoops HQ provide the below highlight video of the promising guard.

Coveted Guard Johnson Schedules UVA Official Visit

Prospects can now take official visits beginning August 1 before their junior year. Keon Johnson, a 6’5”, 180-pound wing out of The Webb School (Bell Buckle, TN), is taking advantage of the new opportunity and has scheduled four official visits so far.

Elite Amateur Basketball Club tweeted the news that Johnson plans to take official visits to Tennessee (Oct. 19-21) and Virginia (Nov. 2-4). The Rivals and 247Sports.com 4-star junior earlier scheduled official visits to Vanderbilt (Sept. 7-9) and Auburn (Oct. 10-12).

Johnson, who attended the 2018 NBPA Top 100 Camp at John Paul Jones Arena in June, has emerged as a top target of Virginia’s since July, when he received a scholarship offer from head coach Tony Bennett. According to The Tennessean, the standout prospect averaged 26 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists per game last season as a junior. He is the son of Conswella Sparrow Johnson, who played collegiate basketball at Auburn.

All four of the schools Johnson has scheduled official visits to have offered. Other offers include Florida, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
