Virginia freshman Ty Jerome made a big splash in his team’s 71-54 win at Notre Dame on Wednesday night. Jerome scored 8 points with 1 key assist down the stretch as the Hoos pulled away. Prior to the game, he tallied 11 points in the previous seven ACC games with a total of 7 points in four league road games.
Much like the teen at your local pool that leaps off the high dive into a loud geyser of water, Jerome’s play received plenty of attention. Rightfully so. Meanwhile, over in the other end of the pool quietly swimming laps was a neighborhood veteran putting in steady work. Isaiah Wilkins had that kind of night.
The junior forward posted 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 1 assist in the victory. It included a 9-of-10 outing at the free throw line. Wilkins scored just once – a strong tip-dunk jam on an offensive rebound – in the first half, but stepped up after intermission as the Hoos started to build a lead. He took advantage of a soft spot at the free throw line with a made jumper when Notre Dame tried zone defense too.
