DT Mandy Alonso Continues UVA’s Recruiting Roll

Gulliver Prep (Miami, FL) rising senior defensive tackle Mandy Alonso confirmed to TheSabre.com that he has verbally committed to the University of Virginia. The 6’3″, 275-pound prospect chose the Hoos over offers from Air Force, Army, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Georgia Tech, Navy, South Florida, Southern Miss, Syracuse, Temple and West Virginia, among others.

The Cavaliers last landed a Gulliver Prep product in the class of 2015, when linebacker Dominic Sheppard signed with the Cavaliers. Gulliver Prep is led by former UVA linebacker Earl Sims. Sheppard will be a red-shirt freshman for UVA this fall.

Alonso’s pledge helps fill a need for Virginia, which is in need of defensive line prospects who can play the nose when the Cavaliers employ a 3-man line. He appears to fit that bill nicely. Alonso and Dominion (Sterling, VA) product Tommy Christ are UVA’s two defensive line recruits in the 2017 Class.

The Cavaliers boast 13 commitments in total in the class, including six in the past eight days and four in the past three days.
