TheSabre.com’s Fan Friday: Football’s Offense, Hoos Your Starting Hoops Five?

As the summer sports calendar crosses its unofficial midway point, it’s been an interesting few days for Virginia players in the pro ranks. From the NBA to Major League Baseball to the women’s soccer World Cup, some former Hoos have made it into headlines during the week.

Malcolm Brogdon picked up an $85 million deal from the Indiana Pacers in the NBA, which pushes him into career earnings territory with Ryan Zimmerman, Matt Schaub, and Chris Long. Mike Scott also re-signed with Philadelphia for a $9.8 million contract as well. Kyle Guy also became the first member of UVA’s championship quarter to play in summer league action with Jack Salt, Ty Jerome, and De’Andre Hunter expected to follow in the coming days.

Over in MLB, Jarrett Parker and Matt Thaiss both got called up to play for the Los Angeles Angels. For Parker, that marked a return to the big leagues after sitting out 2018. For Thaiss, it served as his MLB debut, the fourth Cavalier with that distinction this season (Branden Kline, Josh Sborz, and Adam Haseley).

Four Hoos – Becky Sauerbrunn, who is playing major minutes, Morgan Brian, Emily Sonnett, and Cavalier coach Steve Swanson – have helped the U.S. National Team reach the World Cup title match to be played Sunday.

Plus, there’s been plenty of chatter about current programs on the message boards this week. Fans followed Francisco Caffaro and Kody Stattmann in FIBA U19 action, discussed some storylines for upcoming football season, and more. It’s time for Fan Friday. Let’s go!
