Singh Seeks Another Strong Run

Sanam Singh is looking for both a team and singles title in the upcoming weeks.

When Sanam Singh entered the NCAA Singles Tournament three days after USC had bounced the Cavaliers from the team tournament last season, no one expected him to do much. The No. 26 player in the country at the time, Singh had just been upset by No. 53 Steve Johnson of USC in straight sets, contributing to the Trojans’ 4-0 sweep of the Cavaliers in the NCAA Team Quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals May 22, Singh dropped Tennessee’s John-Patrick Smith, the runner-up in 2008 to Virginia’s Somdev Devvarman. The next day, Singh downed the No. 1 player in the country, Tulsa’s Arnau Brugues, 6-2, 6-4, ending a 28-match winning streak for Brugues in the process. All of a sudden, Singh – all 137 pounds of him – was in the semifinals.
