Hoo Preview 2014: Freshman Report

Each year, TheSabre.com’s “Hoo Preview” includes a “Freshman Report” where the site catches up with some of the true freshmen football players at Virginia. This edition features conversations with defensive tackle Andrew Brown and offensive lineman Jake Fieler, who both enrolled at the University in January of 2014, as well as safety Quin Blanding, tight end Evan Butts, quarterback Corwin Cutler, and wide receiver Jamil Kamara.

Blanding and Brown, consensus 5-star prospects on the high school level, are two of Virginia’s most highly rated recruits in school history. If healthy, they expect to see significant playing time this season. Blanding has been seeing extensive action with the first-team defense this preseason, so he could start against UCLA on August 30 as a true freshman.

Kamara is a 4-star wide receiver out of Virginia Beach, while his good friend and classmate Corwin Cutler had a big-time breakout season as a senior at Ocean Lakes in 2013. That season – Cutler’s senior season – ended with a devastating knee injury, and the talented signal caller then spent the 2013/2014 school year doing postgraduate work at Fork Union Military Academy. Kamara enters his freshman season with high expectations, and as of now it appears he will see the field this coming season.

Butts is realizing a dream, as he has wanted to attend UVa since early on in his high school career. He is a promising tight end prospect but also excels as a long snapper. Fieler was a full qualifier when he graduated from Parkersburg South (W.V), but he wanted more exposure to college programs so he went to Fork Union for a postgraduate semester. UVa was among those that offered and Fieler accepted. He is now working with the second-team offensive line and appears likely to play this coming season.
