Catching Up With Top Target Coleman

When he played in Virginia’s Elite Camp in August of 2013, Matt Coleman, then a rising freshman, had yet to play a single basketball game on the high school level. That day, the standout point guard showed the potential that drew scholarship offers from the University of Virginia and Old Dominion in the months previous.

One year later, the 6’1”, 160-pound Coleman was back in the John Paul Jones Arena for UVa’s 2014 Elite Camp. The Maury (Norfolk, VA) product seemed a much more confident player, using his outstanding speed and quickness to get to the basket, and create for his teammates. Following the August 16 camp, Coleman discussed how the experiences he has had in the past year – leading Maury’s varsity squad to a 25-3 record and a state semifinal appearance before playing for Boo Williams’ 17-and-under squad on the AAU circuit this spring and summer — have made him a better player.

“Playing on the AAU circuit on the EYBL, playing against top names like [Arizona-bound rising senior guard Allonzo] Trier and [coveted rising senior combo guard] Isaiah Briscoe, you can’t punk out when you play against them. You’ve got to bring your all or you’ll sit on the bench. And knowing I came here last year. You’re like a veteran almost,” Coleman said. “Those are some keys that make me more confident.”

With three years of high school basketball and two years of AAU basketball remaining before he heads off to college, Coleman realizes that “this is just the beginning” of his development on the court. His recruitment is in the early stages as well but continues to pick up. Most recently, Coleman landed an offer from 2013/2014 National Champion U-Conn Huskies.
