With Virginia’s 23-21 win over Louisville, the Hoos served notice that they are not planning on being a doormat for ACC opponents this season. What the win means in terms of how UVa will finish out the season remains unanswered. What we do know is that Virginia can’t win games with superb defense, below average special teams, and an offense that can’t get out of its own way (UCLA). We know Virginia can beat overmatched opponents (Richmond) and we know that with solid special teams play, a serviceable offense, and superb defense Virginia can beat ranked opponents (Louisville). The next barometer reading comes this week – can the Hoos win on the road, in an intimidating environment against a good team?
Greg’s Grades
Offense Grades
- Overall Grade: C+ (79.6)
- Quarterback: C- (72.3)
- Running Backs: B (83.7)
- Wide Receivers & Tight Ends: B- (81.8)
- Offensive Line: B- (80.5)
Offense Quick Takes
- Eric Smith (No. 72) had a good day on the line.
- Tight ends had rough day blocking and catching passes. UVa needs this unit to start producing and this week, where the seams will be a point of attack against the BYU 3-4 would be a nice place to start.
- Miles Gooch did a great job at winning high point balls for the receivers; solid downfield blocking – especially Darius Jennings.
- Solid effort by OL with better open field/downfield blocking; three sacks allowed but one was result of QB holding the ball too long; better effort in the run game (4.4 yards per carry – excluding sacks and lateral fumble loss) including 4.1 yards per play rushing on first down.
