Breaking Down Georgia Tech

After exiting its first bye week at 4-2 and undefeated in ACC play, Virginia has dropped two straight football games. Now at .500 on the season with mostly a road slate to go, the Cavaliers face a tough path to bowl eligibility. The first step in the November journey begins Saturday at Georgia Tech.

Let’s break down the Yellow Jackets.

“Odd” Formations

Georgia Tech’s base formation on offense is well known around ACC country thanks to Paul Johnson’s long tenure in Atlanta. Five linemen with two receivers split wide, two A-Backs just off the line of scrimmage and just behind the tackles, the quarterback under center, and the running back in the backfield. Out of this formation, Tech throws a multitude of option plays at the opponent with everything from classic triple-option to quarterback power plays to counter runs on the menu.

The Yellow Jackets do have other formations in the bag of tricks, though. That includes unbalanced line looks where an uncovered tight end takes one side of the line while the tackles go shoulder to shoulder on the opposite side. Here’s a look at a screen cap of that concept:
