NC State fans may be tired of Virginia’s visits to Raleigh at this point. With a 51-47 win Wednesday night, the Cavaliers posted their fourth straight victory against the Wolfpack at PNC Arena. UVa has won eight straight regular season games against NCSU overall. The Double Bonus takes a closer look at the latest W in the streak.

Gill Making Adjustments

In the recent UNC Double Bonus article, one segment focused on Anthony Gill at the halfway point in the conference season. Gill posted double figures in just three of nine games, but that included a 13-point outing against Carolina.

Gill has picked up his offense in the past three games. It started with that 13-point night against the Tar Heels and he followed that up with 10 points against Louisville. Against NC State on Wednesday, he tallied 9 points, a tough night at the free-throw line (3 of 8) keeping him out of double figures again. The three-game average checks in at 10.7 points per game, a number trending toward his 13.2 average in non-conference play. He also grabbed at least 7 rebounds in all three games (7, 8, 11) with an average of 8.7 boards per game.

Part of Gill’s lower scoring start in ACC play (other than foul trouble) has been the opposing defense. League teams put together game plans that instructed Gill’s defenders to avoid contact, to stay down on pre-dribble shot fakes, to sit on the spin move (especially back to his right hand), and to keep him off the offensive glass. After the Louisville game, I asked Gill about adjusting his approach in order to get back on track.
