Virginia secured the outright ACC Regular Season Championship with a win at Syracuse on Monday. The Hoos overcame a slow start offensively and got good games from Anthony Gill, London Perrantes, Mike Tobey, and others. The Double Bonus looks at the title-clinching win.

Mike Tobey’s Big Day

UVa’s post players ended up dominating the match-up in the paint. Anthony Gill, Darion Atkins, and Mike Tobey combined for 33 points and 26 rebounds. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, held Rakeem Christmas and Tyler Roberson to 20 points and 10 rebounds. Gill had the biggest day of all with a game-high 17 points to go with 9 rebounds, while Atkins chipped in 6 points and 9 boards too. That’s essentially par for the course when it comes to those two of late.

For Tobey, however, it ended a tough stretch. He finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds, the highest production in either category since an 11-and-9 day at NC State on Feb. 11. That outing was part of a five-game stretch from Duke through the first Wake Forest contest where Tobey had at least 8 points. After the first meeting with the Demon Deacons, Tobey went through a four-game stretch where his best performance was the rematch with Wake when he had 7 points. In the other three games, he posted 7 total points (Pitt 5, FSU 3, and Virginia Tech 0).

Playing in his home state of New York on Monday, Tobey came to play. In posting the 10-and-8 line, he made an impact during the team’s crucial run to end the first half. After the Hoos trailed 13-2 early, they still were behind 15-9 in the final five minutes before Tobey got the offense going again. He tipped in a pair of missed shots to make it 20-14 in Cuse’s favor and then dunked two-handed on a pass from London Perrantes to give the Hoos their first lead at 21-20.
