Virginia held one of two open spring practices Saturday on a fall-like morning at Scott Stadium. About 250 fans and family showed up for the event. There was plenty of buzz around the debut of linebacker C.J. Stalker but for me, seeing No. 1 Demetrious Nicholson back on the field healthy was the highlight of the day.

Nicholson has been on the shelf except for a brief appearance last fall since the Ball State game back in 2013. A turf-toe injury that required surgery stole 18 games from the Bayside (Virginia Beach) product. After playing against Kent State last fall and not being back fully healthy, he was granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA. On Saturday, Nicholson was back in pads and seemingly back to normal.

“The other day after my first practice my mom asked me how my toe was and I hadn’t even thought about it,” Nicholson said. “It’s feeling great and it’s not nagging anymore. I’m happy and blessed to be back out here.”

Nicholson says the cerebral part of the game, the preparation and instinct never seemed to wane for him. Getting back his speed and sharpness as a cornerback, however, he says has been more of a struggle.
