Consistency. That’s one theme of the spring with the Virginia football team as it continues spring workouts in Charlottesville.
After losing five games last season by a single possession – 28-20 to UCLA, 41-33 to BYU, 20-13 to Duke, 28-27 to UNC, and 24-20 to Virginia Tech – the Cavaliers believe the key to getting over the hump and improving on that 5-7 record is to execute better more regularly on the field. There were obviously moments of strong play and signs of improvement during the 2014 campaign, but breakdowns, poor decision-making, or physical mistakes short-circuited chances to win more games.
The Hoos hope to change those fortunes and they said focusing on more consistent execution this spring is the first step.
“That’s the No. 1 thing we’ve got to do better,” Virginia offensive lineman Ross Burbank said. “All those close games last year and we dropped a couple by less than a touchdown and that’s something you can’t do in college football. That’s really something the coaches and we’re harping on ourselves [as players] to get better at.”
