Virginia Football Notes: Kwontie Moore Could See Bigger Role

One of the persistent questions for the Virginia football team from the media this fall has centered around replacing the lost pass rush from the 2014 defense. The Cavaliers piled up 34 sacks a year ago, which ranked them among the nation’s top 30. Players responsible for 27 of those 34 sacks, however, no longer play for the Hoos.

Max Valles and Eli Harold immediately jump to people’s mind when thinking of the pass rush and that duo delivered 16 sacks in 2014. Valles tallied a team-high nine sacks, while Harold added seven. Henry Coley played a big role in the attack too, though. He recorded eight sacks last season. Virginia also lost the playing services of Daquan Romero (now an assistant coach), who had two sacks, and Anthony Harris (now in NFL camp with the Vikings), who had one.

With all of that firepower missing, the Wahoos are looking for more production from the Moores. Mike Moore added three sacks in 2014 as he bounced between the defensive end and defensive tackle spots. Kwontie Moore finally found a home on the defensive line and added two more.

Kwontie Moore is expected to move into Mike Moore’s inside-outside role this season.
