One of the most exciting pieces of news for some fans to come out of the Virginia football offseason was the proclamation that the Cavaliers would move back to more of a power running attack. It recalls the successful days of George Welsh and the Hoos are hungry for a return to those winning ways.

The components are certainly in place to make the change beginning with the return of former offensive line coach Dave Borbely and the hiring Chris Beatty, who moved over from Wisconsin and his earlier days as a state high school coach. Both coaches are noted for smash-mouth, physical play. Add an experienced and deep offensive line and four quality tailbacks and you have what appears to be a pretty good recipe for success.

The Hoos have a lot of options and lot of diversity at running back. Speedy Taquan ‘Smoke’ Mizzell is shifty and rugged Maryland transfer Albert Reid is a powerful downhill runner. Coach Mike London said Jordan Ellis, a redshirt freshman, is a “short yardage guy or a guy that can be back there and run the ball” as well.

And then there is Daniel Hamm. He is certainly in the mix of guys who will be looked at for Virginia’s power run game. London says the downhill, one-cut running style Hamm learned as a high school freshman fullback is essential to be an effective power running team.
