Duke (No. 8), Louisville (No. 9), Virginia (No. 11), Florida State (No. 12), North Carolina (No. 14), Virginia Tech (No. 21), and Notre Dame (No. 23) made the current AP Top 25. Clemson and Miami were in the “Other Receiving Votes” category. From top to bottom, this year’s Atlantic Coast Conference field is highly impressive.

For UVA, league play began last week with the Hoos taking to the road to meet Louisville before heading home to face Florida State. Virginia dominated the then No. 6-ranked Cardinals but lost to the Dwayne Bacon-led Seminoles, who handed the Cavaliers their second home loss of the year. Coach Tony Bennett and company own an 11-2 record (1-1 in the ACC) heading into a January 4 away matchup against Pittsburgh.

Defense, depth, and balance are the calling cards of this Virginia squad, which features nine players who average double-digit minutes. A 10th player, true freshman point guard Ty Jerome, averages 9.2 minutes per game. Beginning with last week’s action, throughout the season I’ll examine at how each player is performing in this rigorous ACC.
