Catching Up With UVA First Year Forward Jay Huff

Back in mid-March, a then 190-pound Jay Huff had just led Voyager Academy (Durham, N.C.) to a NCHSAA 1A state championship crown. Given the 6’11” forward’s slender stature, redshirting in his first year at Virginia seemed a likely possibility. After all, it is something Cavalier head coach Tony Bennett had discussed with Jay and his father, Voyager Academy boys varsity basketball head coach Mike Huff.

From the time his senior season ended until now, Huff gained 25 pounds of good weight. There of course is still work to do, but his improved physique and strength as well as his unique skill-set may result in a playing role on Virginia’s 2016/2017 squad.

Speaking about Huff at Virginia men’s basketball’s media day on October 17, Bennett seemed impressed with what the first year forward had shown from a skill standpoint as well as a competitive standpoint.

“Really, he can stretch the floor and shoot the 3 ball,” said Bennett, who also noted Huff’s ability to block shots.
