Virginia Basketball Double Bonus: Louisville

Tony Bennett continued his ACC opener success at Louisville on Wednesday night. The win ran Bennett’s record to 8-0 in ACC openers since taking over the UVA program back in 2009.

The most recent victory came in convincing fashion with the Hoos toppling the No. 6 Cardinals with a lead as big as 21 points in the second half. It never dropped to less than 8 points either, though things did get a little shaky and brought back a few memories from the Syracuse loss in the NCAA Tournament for some I suspect. Still, Virginia continues to have Louisville’s number it seems in ACC play. The two teams have faced off 5 times and UVA owns a 4-1 record in those contests.

Virginia fans remember a play called ‘triple pop’ from Malcolm Brogdon’s buzzer beater at Pitt in 2014. The concept featured Brogdon screening for Joe Harris as part of a double screen before turning and following him off the second screen. UVA fans might not notice that the team sometimes uses that same strategy as part of the base ‘sides’ motion offense, though.
