Throughout the Virginia football position preview series, different positions have popped up with a similar theme: is there enough depth? So many spots for the Cavaliers have that question as part of the evaluation. The defensive line is no different.

The main reason the tag sticks for this group is the nose tackle position. That’s one of the most critical positions for Bronco Mendenhall’s preferred 3-4 scheme, though he has said recently that he would adapt the defense if no one emerges as a reliable option in the middle. The gap at nose, of course, was created by the end of Donte Wilkins’ career. He led all the defensive linemen last season with 47 tackles, good enough for sixth on the team overall.

UVA enters the 2017 season with two players listed at tackle on the roster. Both sophomores saw some action there last fall, but both also check in at 275 pounds, a little light perhaps for too high of a snap count on the interior. The duo combined for seven tackles in 2016.

Juwan Moye is the most likely to start of the two after getting into 10 games last fall. He made three tackles after making the change from defensive end and linebacker in high school. James Trucilla redshirted in 2015 and played in six games last fall. He made four tackles. He played tackle in high school and made 40 tackles as a senior.
