Shackled by the Past, Hoping for the Future

Mr. Jefferson’s University, home of the Grounds and an academical village, where first-year students and beyond gather to streak the Lawn, party at Easters, down a fourth-year fifth (preferably bourbon), and sing The Good Old Song after touchdowns.

Ah yes, the University of Virginia is steeped in tradition – some good, some bad, some alive, some defunct – and its supporters wear those traditions on their sleeves, proudly displayed in a nice ensemble with khaki pants, blue blazers, sundresses and Ascot racing hats on a sunny Foxfield Saturday.

Stepping away from the lighthearted jabs at UVa’s customs at-large, one can look at tradition in a different manner, a different setting – the world of Virginia athletics, and more specifically men’s basketball.

UVa’s basketball fans have placed themselves on par with the Crazies and the “Fear the Turtle” supporters, as students sleep in tents and scream until their collective faces turn purple, under the orange and blue war paint, that is. Cav fans have also joined the pedestal of high expectations as well, attaching the following: ACC title contender, NCAA tournament, Sweet Sixteen, and, ooh, ooh, ooh, Final Four.
