Halfway Home

It’s October, I’m officially sick and tired of baseball as both a sport and a business, and the Virginia team sits at 6-3. What does this mean? It means the season’s more than half over, but just the same, we’ll call this article “Halfway Home.”

My thoughts on the season to date:

– Why can’t Al Groh coach? You know, we all heard it before the season. Even after pulling three wins out of a hat last year against ranked teams – usually in spectacular fashion – every fan of every school not named Virginia was convinced that Al Groh was the closest thing to Forrest Gump with a whistle and clipboard. How could this guy be a Division 1 coach, or worse yet, an NFL head coach before that? Yeah, maybe he could recruit, but coaching? No way. And boy, were they right. Outside of an incredible work ethic, extensive knowledge of the game, excellent game plans, superb motivational skills, highly successful in-game adjustments and intense focus, the guy’s terrible.

– What do the following teams have in common? Florida, Colorado, UCLA, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Washington? As of the middle of October, when the Cavs were 6-2, they all had a worse record than Virginia. Try taking that bet back in August.
