For Fontel Mines , attending UVa’s 2002 summer camp was more than a chance to have some fun with friends, learn about techniques and sharpen his receiver skills. It was a chance to gain a little more recognition than he had garnered up to that point, and hopefully earn a scholarship offer from the Cavaliers.
Mines approached the camp with his typical relaxed persona, and ended up earning a scholarship offer from the Cavaliers shortly after with a successful camp showing.
“I went up there and just had fun with my friends,” said Mines, whose time of 4.47 in the 40 yard dash impressed Cavalier coaches. “Of course I was looking for an offer, and that was my main goal. After the whole thing was over, I received an offer from UVa. A lot of different colleges were contacting me as well.”
