Recruiting Profile: Jon Kirchner

Great players are often identified by their ability to change the game’s momentum in a single play, typically late in the game. On the football field, names such as Lawrence Taylor and Ray Lewis come to mind; gridiron gladiators who stand apart from their peers.

Nonetheless, no matter how amazing any one player’s talents, the game itself is still won among the team, as a team, and by the best team.

Virginia football coach Al Groh talks often about building a championship team to compete at the highest level. Because players the caliber of Taylor and Lewis are not readily available at the high school level, Groh has set his sights on possible players with game-changing potential, coupled with the hunger and that essential team mentality.

The player in question, Jon Kirchner , a rising senior at Virginia’s Rockbridge County High School and the fourth recruiting commitment in UVa’s 2004 class, encompasses all of the aforementioned virtues, especially in his commitment to the team.
