On Point

With the game winding down and the Cavaliers in need of a two-point bucket to even the score at 69, Todd Billet drove
down court to initiate a game deciding Wahoo possession. After the scrappy floor general broke the time-line, Billet
found himself cloaked by a Terrapin double-team, running out of options and time.

It was this pressure that eventually provoked another UVA turnover, the most costly of the day for the Hoos. Maryland
freshman D.J. Strawberry scooped up the loose ball, the last of 20 Wahoo turnovers in the game, to help his Terp squad
steal a 71-67 victory road victory.

The loss sent the Cavaliers tumbling to the cellar of the ACC at the halfway point of the regular season and gave the
lowly Clemson Tigers some 9th place company. The midseason setback dropped the Cavs’ record to 12-7 on the year and
2-6 in ACC play.

Although Maryland’s John Gilchrist, a Virginia Beach native and onetime UVA recruit, committed eight turnovers, he
still led all scores with 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The star outscored UVA’s point guard trio — Billet,
Majestic Mapp and T.J. Bannister — and magnified a growing Wahoo weakness: consistency at the point guard position.
