2004 Spring Game: Defense Dominates

In front of 8,239 fans on a beautiful 80-degree day, the Virginia football team held its first actual spring “game” under head coach Al Groh. In previous years, Groh did not have the personnel to hold a real game on the last Saturday of spring practice, but this time he had enough healthy bodies to field two full squads, much to the delight of an impressive crowd.

Former UVa quarterbacks Aaron Brooks and Matt Schaub were among those in attendance and both squads could have used their help as the “Wahoos” (in white) got a 10-7 win over the “Cavaliers” (in blue) in a low-scoring, defensive struggle.

“I just think both [defenses] played good,” said Marques Hagans, who is likely the No. 1 quarterback heading out of spring. “It was a good spring for everyone. We all need to continue to work hard out there.”
