Will Falcons be a Good Fit for Schaub?

Schaub was picked by the Falcons late in the third round.

Late Saturday afternoon had to be nerve-wracking for Matt Schaub and his family. Slated to go in the late second round, or early third round, in this weekend’s NFL draft, Virginia’s quarterback figured to be in good position when the draft began at noon on Saturday. As is often the case, however, things didn’t go exactly according to the mock drafts that littered the Internet leading up to draft day in New York.

Taking the advice of his agent and former NFL draftees, Schaub decided to stay away from the television on Saturday, and spent his day on the golf course, hoping to get a call from his agent while he was out on the course. Instead, 18 holes passed without confirmation from any team, and it was dark outside by the time his phone finally rang with the news.

At 9:58 p.m., only seven picks before the end of the first day, his agent called him with the news that he would be picked by the Atlanta Falcons with the 27th pick of the third round, and 90th pick overall. That’s right, Schaub was picked to back up former Virginia Tech rival Michael Vick , who has become a fan favorite and star only three years into the league, and he is happy to be there.
